Five lessons for new entrepreneurs

Starting a business is a lot like bringing a new life into the world. It’s exciting, it’s challenging, it’s rewarding, it’s demanding.

I learned a lot on my own road to entrepreneurship, and I continue to observe and learn from my clients as they transform themselves into amazingly capable solopreneurs. Here are five lessons I'd love to share that may make your own transformation an easier one:

  • Your personal experience will be unique. Learn from the experience of others, but travel the road your way.

  • Know your weaknesses and plan for them, so that they don't undermine your business success.

  • Sometimes it pays to spend. The old adage "it takes money to make money" has some truth to it.

  • Have a vision, goals, and a plan to take you there. Check in regularly. Plans aren't fixed in stone -- adapt and update them as you learn and as your business grows!

  • Take care of yourself. You are the single most important tool in your business, and it will only thrive if you're thriving.
